Through December    Mad About Hats

Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum, 300 N. Whitewoman Street  (Roscoe Village)

www.jhmuseum.org    (740) 622-8710

Did you know that Coshocton once had a millinery shop located on Second Street?  Or a store named “Coshocton Hat and Dress Shop” on Main Street?  Both of these establishments are represented in Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum’s display Mad About Hats.

From palm leaves to fur, feathers to felt, head coverings come in a variety of shapes, sizes and forms. In 2010, this new JHM exhibit features a remarkable range of vintage hats originating from the 18th c. through the mid 20th century.

Historians believe that hats were one of the first articles of clothing devised by primitive man seeking protection from torrential downpours or sweltering suns. The hats seen in the Golden Gallery, however, are mostly devices of fashion rather than function. From complex embroidery to waving plumes, bright ribbons, bows, flowers, and even an entire stuffed bird, these hats were sure to have garnered attention for their wearers.

Also featured are coordinating accessories, like the outmoded hat box.  Then there is an entire case  devoted to hat pins—long, “lethal weapons” used to anchor hats to their owners’ coiffeurs, and their accompanying holders—containers often mistaken for salt shakers due to the grouping of holes to accommodate pin storage.  Another case illustrates the Roaring Twenties with a close-fitting cloche and coordinating outfit; and yet another embodies—through hats and accessories—the Gay Nineties era. Mad About Hats is made possible by the loan of hats and related items from area collectors, combined with artifacts from JHM’s collections. The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum is located at 300 North Whitewoman Street in Historic Roscoe Village. The museum’s winter hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 1:00 to 4:30 P.M. Admission is $3.00 for adults, $2.00 for children, and $8 for families, with Wednesdays free for Coshocton County residents. Call 622-8710 for further information.
